How to Oil a Kitchen Knife — Step-by-Step Guide for Forged & Damascus Blades
Food-safe knife oil creates a protective barrier against moisture, which is essential for high-carbon forged and Damascus Huusk knives.
Stainless steel knives do not require frequent oiling.
Step1: Fully clean the blade.
Wash the knife and wipe away all food residue.
Make sure the blade is completely dry, no water left.
Step2: Prepare supplies.
Use food-grade mineral knife oil and a lint-free microfiber cloth.
Do not use cooking olive oil, it turns rancid quickly.
Step3: Apply tiny amount of oil.
Drop 1–2 drops of oil onto the cloth, not directly onto the blade.
Rub gently across the entire blade surface, both sides. Avoid heavy oil buildup.
Step4: Wipe off excess oil.
Wait 2–3 minutes, then wipe surplus oil with a clean section of the cloth.
Only a thin invisible oil film remains.
Step5: Oil handle if needed.
For wood handles, lightly oil the handle surface to prevent drying and cracking.
Step6: Store properly.
Leave the knife air-dry for 10 minutes before placing it on the magnetic rack.
Perform oil maintenance every 2 to 3 months for regular home use. If you live in humid coastal areas, increase frequency to once per month.
